Udaipur is yet to be famous and regular destination for Birding in India. This city of lakes can boast of at least 400 species of birds within 100KM vicinity. This Udaipur city is surrounded by many wet lands, lakes, wild life sanctuaries which are accessible within 30min to 2 hours drive. Since we are based in Udaipur, we focus mainly on birding tour in and around Udaipur.
Most of the time, we organise customised Birding Tours for tourists who are already in Udaipur.
Birding Tour in Udaipur during winter:
Winter is the right time for birding tour in Udaipur as it attracts many migratory birds. Here is how we organise the birding tour in Udaipur:-
First Day:-
1. Visit to Mangalwar And Menar
Mangalwar Lake is around 70KM from Udaipur City Centre. We start early in the morning, around 5:30AM and reach Mangalwar Lake around 7:15AM. Sunrise occurs at around the same time. During this period we can have quick breakfast or tea and wait for light to be suitable for bird photography. One can see Marsh Harrier, Red Shank, Bar Headed Goose, GreyLag Goose, Greater Cormorant, Darter or Snake Birds, Grey Francolin, Egrets, Crow Pheasants, Various Sandpipers, Lapwing, Wagtails, Pipits etc.
It takes around 3 to 4 hours to walk around the Mangalwar Lake while observing the birds. Soon after, there will be breakfast break for 30 minutes and we proceed towards another wetland which is around 5KM from Mangalwar towards Chittor. In this wetland, we can spot Black Tailed Gotwit, Indian Roller, Marsh Harrier, Black Ibis, Flamingos, Black Kite, Cormorants etc.
Then we come back to Mangalwar town for lunch. Lunch will be of traditional Rajasthani Daal Bati, if not specified other wise before.
After lunch, we start for Menar Lake. It is around 30KM from Mangalwar towards Udaipur. It takes around 2/3 hours to walk around Menar lake. One can view Greater Flamingo, White Tailed Lapwing, Pelican, Marsh Harrier, Black Kite, Green Sandpiper, Wood sandpiper, Little Ringed Plover, Red wattled Lapwing, Norther Shoveler, Northern Pintail, Common Crane, Bar Headed Goose etc.
After this we come back to Udaipur at around 5:30PM

Second Day :-
Birding at Bathera Kalan and Ghasa Lake
Bathera Kalan is around 40KM from Udaipur city which has two wetlands and jungle area. We will start at 6AM in the morning from Udaipur and reach there at around 6:45AM. On arrival, tea/coffee will be served at Rawla Bathera, a home stay and then proceed towards Bathera lake. We can view Common Sandpiper, Marsh Harrier, Little Grebe, Cormorants, Black-headed Ibis, Woolly-necked Stork, Water Tern, Indian Roller, Wagtails, Plain and Ashy Prinia, White-throated,Common and Pied Kingfisher, Egrets, Eurasian Coot, Purple
heron, Grey Heron, Pond Heron, Cotton Pygmy Goose etc.
After this, we go to other pond with beautiful view. Here we can spot Darter, ndian Grey Hornbill, Asian Koel (Male and Female), Hoopoe, Long Tail Shrike, Rofus Tree pie, Pied Starling, Yellow Eyed Babbler, Jungle Crow, Red breasted flycatcher etc.
Then we take break for lunch. Indian style both vegetarian and non-vegetarian lunch will be provided at Rawla Bathera with excellent view of typical old Rajasthani Village.
We then proceed for Ghasa Lake which is around 25KM from Bathera Kalan towards Mavli. It this we can spot Purple Heron, White Breasted Kingfisher, Common Moorhen, common coot, Comb duck, green bea-eater, wood sandpiper, green sandpiper, black-tailed godwit, yellow wagtail, little ringed plover, saras cranes, blackwinged stilt, painted stork, spoon bill, rudy shelduck etc.
It takes around 2 to 3 hours to walk around and enjoy bird watching!
And at around 5:30PM, we drive back to Udaipur.
